The Detroit Tigers have positioned themselves as the team to beat in the American League Central heading into the 2026 MLB season.

After a quiet start to the offseason, the front office made a major splash on Wednesday by adding left-hander Framber Valdez in free agency.

The 32-year-old veteran was widely regarded as the best player available, and the Tigers capitalized with Spring Training approaching, signing him to a three-year $115 million deal that includes an opt-out after the second season.

Many wondered whether Detroit had the payroll flexibility to add another impactful player with left-handed ace Tarik Skubal entering a lucrative arbitration case, yet the Tigers showed they were willing to spend.

The timing of the Valdez signing created even more intrigue. The deal became public before the results of Skubal’s arbitration hearing were announced, leading many to believe the Tigers had prevailed and that Skubal’s salary would land at $19 million for his final season under team control.

Instead, on Thursday, it was revealed that Skubal had actually won his case, setting a record for the highest arbitration salary ever at $32 million for 2026. It was a well-earned figure for the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner.

When the Valdez move became public on Wednesday, Skubal took to social media to welcome his new rotation partner, posting a message to Valdez that read, “Dinner’s on you,” a playful nod to the size of his contract.

On Thursday, Tigers starter Jack Flaherty decided to join in on the fun. Now that Skubal is getting paid, Flaherty added his own message to build on Skubal’s joke. “Dinner’s on Skub and Framber,” he wrote on his Instagram story.

With Skubal, Valdez and Flaherty now aligned, the Tigers have built a rotation that can carry them through a full season and into October.

Skubal remains the centerpiece after posting a 2.21 ERA with 241 strikeouts across 195 1/3 last year, singlehandedly pushing Detroit through the MLB playoffs.

Some of that pressure is now eased with Valdez arriving from the Houston Astros after eight outstanding seasons that included two All-Star selections and a World Series title. He also reunites with his former manager A.J. Hinch, which should help his transition.

Flaherty is looking to bounce back in 2026 at the back end of the rotation, yet he has shown he can still be an impactful starter. All three are crucial to Detroit’s chances of winning the division.
