The Seattle Mariners have been incredibly underwhelming in the 2026 MLB season. After coming just one win short of reaching the World Series in 2025, the organization has taken a clear step backward through two months of play.

Still, there is plenty of time for them to get back on track, especially with the American League West still up for grabs. J.P. Crawford has been one of the steadier contributors for Seattle, now in his eighth season with the organization.

The 31-year-old veteran has posted a .217 batting average, .361 on-base percentage, .738 OPS, six home runs and 16 RBIs across 39 appearances. He has also continued to provide reliable defense at shortstop.

Crawford drew the start at leadoff and at shortstop for Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres. Unfortunately, he did not finish the game, with Leo Rivas taking over for him in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the third, Crawford was drilled in the right triceps by a fastball from Padres starter Lucas Giolito, which appeared to be the reason for his early exit.

After the game, Mariners manager Dan Wilson confirmed that the hit-by-pitch caused an injury leading to his removal from the contest. "J.P. Crawford had a contusion on his right triceps after the HBP today that made it difficult to get extension with that arm, per Dan Wilson," reported Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.

This marks Crawford’s second injury setback of the year. He dealt with right shoulder inflammation during spring training, though he still managed to return shortly after Opening Day.

If Crawford misses time, it would come at a difficult moment for Seattle. Brendan Donovan, the team’s primary third baseman, was placed on the injured list Sunday, leaving the Mariners down another everyday contributor.

Colt Emerson was called up to take over at third base for Donovan, but he could also take reps at shortstop if necessary. With the Mariners trying to get back over the .500 mark, losing Crawford for any stretch would be another huge obstacle.
