J.J. McCarthy has opened up about his surprising trade from the Minnesota Vikings to the New York Giants.
NFL reporter Jordan Raanan shared McCarthy’s comments on X after the Vikings traded him to New York on Sept. 28. McCarthy admitted the move came as a surprise but said he is focused on making the most of his new opportunity.
“It was a bit of a shock,” McCarthy said, according to Raanan. “But at the end of the day, it’s an opportunity.”
McCarthy added that he is focused on the present and is leaving his time with Minnesota behind.
The Vikings traded McCarthy to the Giants for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. Minnesota selected him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft after moving up to secure the quarterback.
His time with the Vikings never developed as expected. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season after suffering a torn meniscus during the preseason.
McCarthy eventually started seven games in 2025, throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The Vikings then moved on after McCarthy lost the starting competition during the 2026 offseason.
For McCarthy, New York now provides a fresh opportunity. However, he will not immediately take over the Giants’ offense. Raanan reported that McCarthy spent the week working as the scout team quarterback while learning the Giants’ system.
Head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged that learning the offense will be “a challenge” for McCarthy.
The Giants acquired McCarthy after rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury. Jameis Winston remains the team’s starter.
McCarthy understands that he has work to do before earning a larger role. So, for now, the former first-round pick is focused on learning his new offense and proving himself in New York.
His message is clear that the Vikings are in the past, and the Giants represent his next chapter.
