Italy almost pulled off an upset against Team USA on Sunday, losing by just three points, 55-52.
However, what drew a lot of attention was Cecilia Zandalasini’s behavior, particularly after the final play of the game. The Italy star has since apologized for her actions when she addressed the media during her postgame availability.
Zandalasini lashed out at referees for a non-call after missing the game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer. The Golden State Valkyries forward reacted as if she got poked in the eye on the final play, and she was adamant that a foul should have been called against the U.S.
Zandalasini was more composed when she spoke to the media after the game. She took the opportunity to explain her actions.
“This press conference, I would like to apologize for how I reacted in the end to the opponent team,” Zandalasini said. “It was a lot of emotions today, but I should have kept them inside of me a little better. I want to apologize to the referees.
“And it’s just when I wear this jersey, it’s just a different beast, I guess, that comes out of me. And now I even feel embarrassed for how I reacted. So that’s it. Thank you.”
Many expected Zandalasini to once again lead the charge for her team. She finished with a game-high 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The 30-year-old was the lone Italian player to score in double figures. Italy has a 1-1 record in the group stage and will next face China on Monday.
Jackie Young spearheaded Team USA’s attack with 10 points. The Americans hold a 2-0 record and have already secured a quarterfinals berth. They will return to action on Monday to take on the Czech Republic in their final group phase game.
