After the Indiana Fever’s playoff exit, the attention of the fan base has turned to free agency and what else the team can do in order to compete for a championship. One of the biggest question marks for the team is Kelsey Mitchell and what she’s going to do next.
There’s no denying that Mitchell has been one of Indiana’s best players. Some would even argue that she’s more important to the team than All-Star guard Caitlin Clark.
Mitchell led the Fever in scoring in the 2026 season, averaging 24.7 points on 50.9% shooting. She was also second in the WNBA in points per game, behind only A’ja Wilson (26.2 points).
However, Mitchell is set to become an unrestricted free agent after signing a $1.4 million supermax deal with the team last offseason. Considering how phenomenal she has been for Indiana, a number of teams are expected to pursue her.

During the Fever’s exit interviews on Saturday, Mitchell was asked about her upcoming free agency. Unfortunately for Indiana, the superstar scorer was noncommittal about returning to the team and expressed every intention of assessing her options before making a decision.
According to Mitchell, she will make a decision based on what’s best for her and her career, especially since she is already 30 years old and will be in her 10th year in the WNBA next season.
Mitchell also shared that having “good chemistry on and off the floor” will factor into her decision.
“I have to be selfish,” Mitchell stated. “I think that’s where I am in my career.”
Mitchell did say that it’s still too early for her to think about what comes next, adding that she will have conversations with Indiana since the team has been a huge reason for her success.
For what it’s worth, Fever general manager Amber Cox said on Saturday that retaining Mitchell will be a “major priority” for Indiana.
“You can see, feel and hear the love that this fan base has for her, and that permeates throughout this entire organization,” Cox said of Mitchell.
