The Bill Self era for the Kansas Jayhawks might be coming to an end soon.

Self is undoubtedly one of the best coaches that college basketball has seen over the past two decades. Unfortunately, he has dealt with several medical complications in recent years. He underwent a "standard heart catheterization" in 2023, had two stents inserted into his heart in 2025, and was taken to the hospital this past January out of an abundance of caution.

Just three days ago, Kansas lost to St. John's in the Round of 32 on a buzzer beater. During his postgame press conference, Self revealed that he hasn't decided if he'll coach next season.

"I'll get back and get with family and visit and see what's going on," Self said after the heartbreaking loss to St. John's. "I love what I do, I need to be able to do it where I'm feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well. I'll get back home, and it'll all be discussed."

On Wednesday morning, a social media user by the name of "Rob Reinhart" posted on X that Self is retiring from coaching.

"After 23 years and two national championships with the Jayhawks, the legendary coach has decided to call it a career," Reinhart wrote. "One of the hottest jobs in sports is now open."

It's important to note that Reinhart strictly posts misinformation on social media. Self has not yet decided if he'll keep coaching.

Who would Kansas target if Bill Self actually retires?

Florida's Todd Golden is undoubtedly the most popular name in coaching rumors right now, but there's no guarantee he'd even leave Gainesville.

If Kansas wanted to go with a proven winner in the Big 12, pursuing Iowa State's T.J. Otzelberger makes a lot of sense.

Again, this is strictly if Self decides to call it a career. For now, Kansas still has the two-time national champion on its staff.
