The New York Mets got some good news on one of their injured starting pitchers.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the expectation is that right-hander Clay Holmes (fractured fibula) will begin throwing around July 1.

As a result, it's certainly possible that Holmes can make it back to the Mets' starting rotation before the August 3 MLB trade deadline. This is a promising update considering Holmes could be one of the Mets' top trade chips.

The Mets, who are 34-41 on the season, appear destined to be sellers at the deadline this summer, barring a significant turnaround. Holmes was the Mets' best starter prior to breaking his leg on May 15 against the New York Yankees.

In nine starts (52.2 innings) for the Mets this season, Holmes was 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 45 strikeouts. Opposing batters hit just .206 against him.

Holmes was on his way to making his first All-Star appearance as a starting pitcher before going down with injury. The righty took a line drive comebacker at 111.1 mph off the bat of Yankees rookie outfielder Spencer Jones in the Subway Series.

The Mets have dealt with injury woes and underperformance in their starting rotation this year. The team currently has just four healthy starters in Freddy Peralta, Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, who started the season in the bullpen, and Nolan McLean. Left-hander David Peterson was demoted to the bullpen due to his 7.56 ERA as a starter in 2026.

The Mets are trying to claw their way back into the National League playoff race. They're in last place in the NL East division at 13 games back, but are five games back of the third and final Wild Card spot.

New York has two more games in their series against the NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies this weekend.
