Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever are ramping up preparation for the 2026 WNBA season. The Phoenix Mercury traded Cunningham to the Fever before the start of the 2025 season in a deal that involved four teams, multiple picks and players. Cunningham was drafted by the Mercury in the second round of the 2019 draft (No. 13 overall) and spent her first six seasons in Phoenix.
In her first season in Indianapolis, Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Known for her tenacity and fiery spirit, the 6-foot-1 guard took on the role of enforcer and quickly became a fan favorite by protecting superstar teammate Caitlin Clark from opponents.

Cunningham is keenly aware of how her bread is buttered; prioritizing Clark’s success is the best way to ensure team glory. Clark has been a revelation on and off the court and is considered one of the biggest stars in basketball, regardless of gender. In February, she announced a partnership with Gatorade. Available now is the “Rain Berry” flavor, a commemorative low-sugar drink with Clark graphics. Also available is a 22-by-42-inch limited-edition towel featuring a custom Rain Berry design inspired by Clark herself.
On Friday, Clark went on social media to showcase Cunningham and her new Gatorade drink. In an Instagram Story, Clark posted a video of Cunningham holding a bottle of Clark’s new Gatorade flavor. Cunningham takes a swig from the drink and shares her reaction.
“Honestly, it’s like — it’s a gentle, easy smooth drink,” Cunningham says.
Indiana begins its season May 9 in a home opener against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.
