A lot of eyes were focused on Caitlin Clark ahead of the USA-Italy game on Sunday. She delivered a historic performance against China on Friday, recording the most assists by a Team USA player in a FIBA World Cup game in 28 years.
However, she hit a new low in her second game of the tournament.
The Indiana Fever superstar finished with one point on 0-for-6 shooting in Sunday’s 55-52 win over Italy. She missed all three of her three-point attempts and registered just one assist and one steal, along with two turnovers. It was the first time Clark failed to convert any of her field goal attempts throughout her college and WNBA career.
“Caitlin Clark went 0-6 for 1 point in the United States’ 3-point win over Italy at the FIBA Women’s World Cup Sunday,” ESPN Insights posted on X. “She has never gone 0-for in a WNBA or collegiate game.”
The entire U.S. roster struggled, with only Jackie Young scoring in double digits with 10 points. Angel Reese backed her with eight points, while Paige Bueckers contributed seven.
Team USA shot 16-of-56 for 28.6%, including 1-of-12 from beyond the arc. The good news is they kept their unbeaten record intact and secured a quarterfinals berth.
Clark and Co. will next face the Czech Republic on Monday. Bouncing back strong and earning another victory will be crucial ahead of the knockout stage. A win will give them more momentum and help them move on quickly from Sunday’s uncharacteristic outing.
