The Indiana Fever closed out their regular season with two losses in their last three games, including Thursday’s disappointing 86-66 defeat to the Minnesota Lynx. Despite ending the campaign on a sour note, the Fever still set the WNBA record for most points in a single season, as well as the highest points-per-game average.
The Fever scored 4,222 points throughout the season, registering at least 100 points 20 times. The league increased the number of games to 44 starting last season, which is a significant factor in Indiana’s record-setting campaign.
The Fever also averaged the most points per game this year with 96.0. Behind them are their first-round playoff opponents, the Las Vegas Aces, with 91.5 points per game. Indiana broke the previous record set by the Phoenix Mercury in 2010 with 93.9 points per game.
Kelsey Mitchell holds the highest scoring average among all Fever players. She ranked second in the league with 24.7 points per game, with only the Aces’ A’ja Wilson averaging more at 26.2. Caitlin Clark is third in the WNBA with 22.3, giving Indiana a strong one-two punch in the backcourt. Aliyah Boston ranks 18th with 16.1 points per game.
The Fever completed their regular season with a 28-16 record and secured the No. 6 seed. They will face the No. 3-seeded Aces, who own home-court advantage. The teams will play Games 1 and 3 (if necessary) at Michelob Ultra Arena, while Game 2 will be played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Mitchell, Clark, Boston and the rest of the Fever face the unenviable task of needing to dethrone the defending champions to advance to the second round. The Aces eliminated them in the semifinals last season.
