Kimi Antonelli has said that he never thought he would come into the summer break of Formula 1 with the Drivers' Championship in his hands, and he has attributed that to Mercedes' going above and beyond in his rookie season.

The Italian driver has been the surprise of the 2026 season, regularly testing the established stars of F1. The Mercedes star has delivered a series of mature performances that have catapulted him to the top of the rankings.

Antonelli is in the second half of the season as the driver everyone is looking for, but he says there's still plenty of room for him to improve.

Antonelli Didn't Expect to Lead the Championship

Antonelli, who has become Mercedes' newest star, took time to talk about his incredible first half of the season and said the current championship situation has been a surprise.

The Mercedes driver said, "I did not expect to find myself in this position."

The Italian was quick to praise Mercedes for providing him with a car that could compete at the front of the pack in the first races.

He added, "They've done an incredible job."

Mercedes has been continuously refining its package throughout the 2026 season, and Antonelli has been able to reap the rewards of that with wins, podiums and championship points against other competitors such as Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.

His cool demeanor under pressure has been one of the highlights of the season, and the youngster has been consistent, which is a rarity for a young F1 driver.

Mercedes Star Keeping Expectations in Check

Antonelli has been in the lead in the title race with 219 points, but he's not fully satisfied with his own results.

The Italian added, "There's still lots of work to do, lots to learn."

The youngster admitted that the championship battle is not over yet, as there are still a few races to be played after the summer break in Formula 1. Lewis Hamilton is his nearest competitor with 169 points. Mercedes teammate George Russell stands third currently with 160 points.

Antonelli will also know that other teams are likely to make improvements in the second half of the season, so he can't afford to be complacent.

Yet his measured response is the attitude that has endeared him to so many in the paddock. Antonelli isn't thinking about the championship lead; he's thinking about learning and improving every weekend.
