Fresh off winning the 2026 Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes, Taylor Hall reflected on the toughest moments of the team's championship run. Surprisingly, Hall pointed to the Eastern Conference Final opener against the Montreal Canadiens as Carolina's biggest challenge of the postseason.
Speaking on TSN OverDrive, Hall admitted the Hurricanes felt pressure after Montreal stunned them 6-2 in Game 1. The loss handed Carolina its first playoff defeat after sweeping through the first two rounds.
"There was some frustration," Hall said about the mindset of the Hurricanes' team. "And I got the sense that it's great to have a nice regular season and get a hundred points and win your division. But ultimately, if we couldn't get over that conference final hump, I don't think that the season would be looked at as a success.
"So there was that kind of anxiety, especially when we lost that first game in the conference finals against Montreal. We were all just kind of a little bit pissed off at how that went and I think that was just rust overall."
The Canadiens' young roster pushed Carolina harder than the final 4-1 series result suggests. Montreal entered the conference final after surviving consecutive seven-game battles against Tampa Bay and Buffalo.
Hall praised the Hurricanes' response after the opening setback. Carolina rebounded with back-to-back overtime victories before taking complete control of the series.
"And once we got over that conference final, once we got that and we were in the Stanley Cup Final, I think we were all just super excited to hopefully take that step, and it was a great series for us," Hall said.

The veteran winger also highlighted the culture that helped Carolina finally break through. Hall credited head coach Rod Brind'Amour and the organization's commitment to detail on both sides of the puck.
"I would say there's as much detail on the offensive side of things as there is on the defensive side," Hall said. "Everyone likes to make us out to be a defensive team, but we had the second most goals in the league last year."
The Hurricanes finished the playoffs with a dominant 16-3 record and defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to secure the franchise's second Stanley Cup. Captain Jordan Staal earned the Conn Smythe Trophy after leading the club through a historic postseason.
Looking back, Montreal deserves significant credit for testing Carolina's resolve. While the Hurricanes ultimately lifted the Cup, the Canadiens exposed vulnerabilities early and forced the eventual champions to elevate their game.
For a young Montreal team on the rise, Hall's comments show that their breakthrough may not be far away.
