The second week of the 2026 US Open brings a blockbuster Round of 16 clash to Louis Armstrong Stadium, with No. 7 seed Daniil Medvedev taking on American home favorite and No. 11 seed Frances Tiafoe.
It is a fascinating matchup between two very different styles. Medvedev is known for his deep-court positioning, relentless defense and ability to stretch rallies until his opponent runs out of answers. Tiafoe, meanwhile, thrives on explosive shot-making, athleticism and the energy of the New York crowd. With a place in the quarterfinals on the line, here’s everything you need to know about the match, including the start time, where to watch, live streaming details, head-to-head record and prediction.
Daniil Medvedev vs. Frances Tiafoe: Start Time and Where to Watch
The fourth-round clash is scheduled for Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Louis Armstrong Stadium, the tournament’s second-largest show court.
The match is officially scheduled to begin not before 3:00 p.m. ET. It is part of the day’s schedule on Louis Armstrong Stadium and will follow the conclusion of the women’s singles match between Marta Kostyuk and Linda Noskova, meaning the actual start time could be pushed back depending on how long that match lasts.
Interestingly, Tiafoe specifically wanted to play this match on Louis Armstrong. After sweeping past Valentin Vacherot in the third round, the No. 11 seed revealed that he had requested to play on the court, rather than the larger Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Tiafoe explained that he enjoys the atmosphere inside Armstrong, particularly the way fans interact with the players and the absence of the corporate suites that surround much of Ashe Stadium.
“Just great energy in there: a lot of talking, a lot of things going on. But it’s just good energy. They get behind me. It’s nice, because no suites and stuff, I find that people are actually watching the tennis. Yeah, and the grounds passes [get you in]. It’s cool. It’s a cool court.”

That atmosphere could be particularly important against Medvedev. Tiafoe has always been capable of feeding off the New York crowd, and having specifically chosen Armstrong gives him another reason to believe the court can work in his favor.

Medvedev vs. Tiafoe Head-to-Head Record
History heavily favors Medvedev heading into their latest meeting.
The Russian owns a 6-1 career head-to-head advantage over Tiafoe in main-draw ATP matches. Their rivalry has also been dominated by hard courts, with Medvedev holding a 6-0 record against Tiafoe in outdoor hard-court meetings.
Their most recent encounter came earlier this season at the 2026 Brisbane International, where Medvedev produced a dominant performance to defeat Tiafoe 6-3, 6-2 in just 59 minutes.
Tiafoe’s only victory over Medvedev came in an exhibition setting at the 2024 Laver Cup, where the American prevailed in a 10-point match tiebreak on an indoor court. That result, however, came under very different circumstances from a best-of-five Grand Slam match.
The numbers therefore give Medvedev a clear advantage, but Tiafoe will have one major factor working in his favor in New York: the home crowd.
Medvedev vs. Tiafoe: Who Has the Edge?
On paper, this is a matchup that suits Medvedev.
The Russian’s ability to absorb pace and redirect the ball from well behind the baseline can frustrate Tiafoe’s aggressive approach. The American likes to take control of points early, using his forehand, serve and athleticism to dictate play. Medvedev’s deep court position, however, gives him plenty of time to deal with that first wave of aggression and turn long rallies into a test of patience.
The physical side of the matchup could also become important in a best-of-five contest. Medvedev has plenty of experience navigating long Grand Slam matches, while Tiafoe will have to find a way to keep the intensity high without allowing his level to dip.
Then there is Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Tiafoe has made it clear that this is exactly where he wants to be. His comments about the court’s “great energy” and fans who are genuinely focused on the tennis underline how comfortable he feels in the atmosphere. If the Armstrong crowd gets behind him early, it could make life considerably harder for Medvedev.
Tiafoe’s aggressive game also gives him a clear path to victory. He will need to serve well, take the ball early and avoid getting dragged into the long, defensive exchanges that Medvedev prefers.
But Medvedev’s record against Tiafoe, particularly on outdoor hard courts, is difficult to overlook.
Daniil Medvedev vs. Frances Tiafoe Prediction
The New York crowd could make this a much closer contest than the head-to-head record suggests, and Tiafoe should have his moments.
However, Medvedev’s ability to defend, extend rallies and force Tiafoe to hit one more ball is likely to become increasingly important as the match progresses. His hard-court experience and success in best-of-five matches give him another advantage.

Tiafoe choosing Armstrong could make the contest more interesting, especially if the crowd gets fully invested. But Medvedev has consistently found ways to neutralize Tiafoe’s strengths in their previous meetings.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to defeat Frances Tiafoe in four sets and advance to the US Open quarterfinals.
