Ben Rice and the New York Yankees were shut out by the Tampa Bay Rays, 1-0, in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday. Catcher Austin Wells was the only Yankees player to record a hit in the game, knocking a double off Tampa Bay starting right-handed pitcher Drew Rasmussen.
Rasmussen went eight innings, allowing one hit and recording 10 strikeouts, with closing pitcher Bryan Baker receiving the save. Yankees manager Aaron Boone will have to rally his troops for Game 2 on Monday.

New York will send right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler, who is in the running for the American League Cy Young Award, to the mound for Game 2. Schlittler went 14-6, finishing second in the league with a 1.95 ERA, tied for third with 239 strikeouts and was fourth with a 0.92 WHIP.
Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash will trust veteran right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta in the game. The 6-foot-0 starting pitcher was dealt at the 2026 MLB deadline from the New York Mets to Tampa. The 30-year-old started 10 games for the Rays, going 5-2 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.
Tampa Bay (98-64) finished with the best record in the American League, winning the AL East. New York (93-68) was second, right behind them. The Rays can close the series out on Monday to head to the AL Championship Series.
