No. 14 BYU begins its 2026 college football campaign Saturday when it welcomes Utah Tech to LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo.

The Cougars are coming off a 12-2 season in 2025 that saw them reach the Big 12 Championship Game. BYU returns 18 starters from last year’s team and enters the new season with expectations of making another run at the College Football Playoff.

Quarterback Bear Bachmeier returns for his sophomore season after a standout freshman campaign. He started all 14 games in 2025, completing 64.9% of his passes for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 527 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

BYU Cougars Week 1 Roster Outlook

Kalani Sitake enters his 11th season as BYU’s head coach. The Cougars went 12-2 last season and lost to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship Game before winning the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Bachmeier will lead the offense again after becoming the first true freshman quarterback in FBS history to start his team’s season opener and go on to win 12 games as a starter. He was named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2025.

BYU also returns running back LJ Martin, who is chasing the program’s career rushing record. The Cougars have added several weapons around Bachmeier, including Oregon transfer Kyler Kasper and USC transfer Walker Lyons.

Utah Tech Trailblazers Week 1 Roster Outlook

Utah Tech enters its second game of the season after opening 2026 with a 54-0 loss to Montana State. The Trailblazers went 2-10 in 2025 and are beginning their first season as a member of the Big Sky Conference.

Lance Anderson enters his third season as Utah Tech’s head coach. Anderson previously spent 16 seasons at Stanford, including nine as defensive coordinator, before taking over the Trailblazers.

Saturday marks just the second meeting between the programs. BYU won the first matchup 52-26 in Provo in 2022 after Utah Tech led 6-0 after the first quarter.
