College basketball fans will get an early look at two of the nation’s most successful programs Tuesday night when the UConn Huskies travel to East Lansing to face the Michigan State Spartans in a preseason exhibition at the Breslin Center.
The matchup brings together two accomplished head coaches in Dan Hurley and Tom Izzo, both of whom have established reputations for building competitive teams capable of making deep NCAA Tournament runs.
UConn enters the 2026-27 season hoping to remain among the country’s elite programs, while Michigan State is looking to build on another successful campaign under Izzo. The Spartans finished last season with a 27-8 record, earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16.
Although Tuesday’s game will not count in the regular-season standings, it provides both coaching staffs with an opportunity to evaluate their rotations, develop chemistry and identify areas requiring improvement before meaningful games begin in November.

UConn Looking To Build On Strong Exhibition Showing
The Huskies enter Tuesday’s matchup following a 72-52 exhibition victory over Syracuse on October 13 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
UConn received an encouraging performance from Na’jai Hines, who scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Duke transfer Nik Khamenia also made an impact with 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Silas Demary Jr. is another important player for Hurley’s team. His experience, defensive ability and leadership should be valuable as UConn works to establish its identity.
The Huskies also have several newcomers competing for significant roles, making exhibition games particularly useful for evaluating different lineup combinations.
Facing Michigan State on the road represents another challenging test. The Spartans are traditionally physical, disciplined and difficult to beat inside the Breslin Center.
Michigan State Preparing For Another Big Ten Challenge
Izzo’s Spartans opened their exhibition schedule with an 89-59 victory over Incarnate Word on October 2.
Michigan State enters the new campaign following a season that included 15 Big Ten victories and another appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s second weekend.
The Spartans have reached the Sweet 16 17 times under Izzo, an impressive achievement that demonstrates the program’s consistency over multiple decades.
Tuesday’s exhibition against UConn should provide a much different challenge than Michigan State’s opening preseason contest. Hurley’s teams are known for their physicality, disciplined offensive movement and ability to execute in high-pressure situations.
Michigan State will want to establish its defensive identity, rebound effectively and generate quality offensive opportunities against a talented opponent.
For UConn, the matchup presents an opportunity to evaluate its newcomers against a team with the size and intensity expected from a Big Ten contender.
Both programs have significant expectations entering the season, and Tuesday’s exhibition should offer fans an entertaining preview of what lies ahead.
