The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox renew one of baseball’s biggest rivalries Tuesday night in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card series. The best-of-three series begins at Yankee Stadium, with both teams looking to take an early lead in a matchup that sends the winner to the AL Division series.
New York finished the regular season 93-68, while Boston went 87-75. The Yankees enter the postseason after winning three of their final five games, while the Red Sox split their final five. New York also won three of four against Boston in the most recent series at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees won last year’s Wild Card Series against Boston in three games, with Cam Schlittler delivering eight scoreless innings and 12 strikeouts in the deciding Game 3. Schlittler gets the ball again for Game 1, while Boston counters with rookie left-hander Payton Tolle.

Red Sox vs Yankees Preview
Schlittler enters Game 1 after a dominant regular season in which he went 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA and 239 strikeouts. Tolle went 9-6 with a 3.03 ERA and 171 strikeouts for Boston.
The Yankees will have to navigate the early portion of the postseason without Aaron Judge, who was left off the Wild Card Series roster because of a strained right calf. Judge appeared in only 66 games this season and hit .241 with 18 home runs and 41 RBIs.
The series is a rematch of last year’s AL Wild Card matchup. New York won that series 2-1 before advancing to the AL Division Series.
