The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins open the 2026-27 NHL regular season Wednesday night in Philadelphia, renewing a rivalry that produced a memorable playoff series just five months ago.
The Flyers finished the 2025-26 regular season with 98 points and advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Philadelphia eliminated Pittsburgh in six games in the first round, with Cam York scoring the overtime winner in Game 6 to send the Flyers through.
Pittsburgh also finished with 98 points last season, earning its first playoff berth since 2022. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Erik Karlsson return for the Penguins, while Philadelphia brings back Travis Konecny, Matvei Michkov and Owen Tippett.

Crosby remains the centerpiece of Pittsburgh’s lineup after leading the Penguins with 74 points last season. He will be joined by Malkin and Karlsson as Pittsburgh begins another season with its veteran core intact. Anthony Mantha led the Penguins with 33 goals last season.
Konecny leads a Philadelphia group that also features Michkov, Sean Couturier and Trevor Zegras. The Flyers’ opening-night roster includes 14 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.
The matchup carries added significance because it is the first meeting between the teams since Philadelphia ended Pittsburgh’s playoff run in April. The Penguins will have another opportunity to face the Flyers on Jan. 31 and April 3 during the regular season.
