The Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings are both searching for their first victory of the new NHL season when they meet Sunday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena.
Winnipeg came painfully close to starting the season with a win Friday night before falling 4-3 in overtime against the Boston Bruins. Kyle Connor helped lead the Jets’ offense with a goal and an assist, but JJ Peterka scored the winner for Boston in overtime.
Detroit had an even more frustrating opener.
The Red Wings were shut out 2-0 by the New York Rangers on Friday and enter Sunday’s game still searching for their first goal of the season.

Jets Look To Bounce Back After Overtime Loss
Winnipeg certainly showed some encouraging signs in its opener. Connor extended his remarkable streak of scoring in season openers to nine straight years and added an assist against Boston.
The Jets won’t have Connor Hellebuyck in net Sunday because of his suspension, leaving Stuart Skinner projected to start against Detroit.
The Red Wings have some significant personnel concerns of their own. Dylan Larkin is dealing with an upper-body injury and isn’t expected to play Sunday. Marco Kasper also is unavailable with an upper-body injury.
That puts even more pressure on a Detroit offense that failed to score Friday.
John Gibson is projected to start in net for the Red Wings.
Neither team wants to begin the season digging an early hole. Winnipeg already secured one point from its overtime loss, while Detroit enters Sunday without one.
It may only be the opening weekend, but two teams looking for their first victory should have plenty of urgency in Detroit.
