There are golf collectibles that look great in a frame.
Then there are golf collectibles that still make you feel something.
That is what jumped out at me in this week’s Collectables post for the Golf Heritage Society. This one is not just about Ben Hogan, though that alone would be enough to get any serious golf fan’s attention. It is about timing, tension and the kind of sports history that still feels alive decades later.
With the PGA TOUR in Texas and Masters season almost here, Hogan feels like the right figure to revisit. Few names carry more weight in Texas golf history, and few players loom larger in the game’s imagination. This week on the Golf Heritage Society blog, I take readers into a fascinating Hogan grouping from the collection of GHS President George Petro, built around a period press photo from the 1955 U.S. Open and the newspaper coverage that came with it.
What makes it hit so hard is not just who is in the photo.
It is when the photo was taken, and what the golf world believed at that moment.
The image shows Hogan under a tree in heavy rough during the 1955 U.S. Open at Olympic Club. Hogan posted 287, and much of the media thought the championship was his. But Jack Fleck birdied the final hole to force a tie, then stunned Hogan in the playoff, 69-72. That reversal is what gives this collectible its punch. It preserves the moment before the ending changed, before certainty gave way to one of the great twists in championship golf.
That is a big part of why old press pieces matter so much.
They were never meant to be luxury items. They were working objects. They were handled, marked up, shipped, clipped and filed. They did their job in the moment, and because of that, they often carry more authenticity than something produced later for display. The wear, the marks and the imperfections are not drawbacks. They are part of the story.
