England faces one of its toughest tests of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as it travels to Estadio Azteca to take on an in-form Mexico side on Sunday, July 5.
Thomas Tuchel's team will not only have to deal with a confident home team but also one of the most challenging venues in world soccer. Mexico has looked dominant throughout the tournament and will have the backing of a loud home crowd as it looks to continue its impressive run.
While severe weather has already disrupted the match, delaying kickoff by an hour, another factor drawing attention is Mexico City's high altitude.
Estadio Azteca sits about 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level. The thinner air reduces oxygen levels, causes players to tire more quickly, and can affect the flight of the ball, making the conditions especially demanding for visiting teams who are not used to such venues.
Mexico's performances throughout the tournament reflect how much of an advantage playing at home can be. El Tri has yet to concede a goal, winning all three group-stage matches before defeating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 to reach the Round of 16.
While their quality has been undeniable, they have also benefited from playing every match in familiar high-altitude conditions.

Tuchel admitted he had already experienced some of the effects of the altitude himself.
"I felt, for example, a slight headache in the hotel room throughout the day, I did not sleep as well as the days before but nothing that you cannot handle and you cannot adapt. I think the players felt it in the first minutes of the training session and the longer it went they could cope with it better," the head coach of the Three Lions said.
Why Was Mexico vs. England Delayed?
The Round of 16 match at Estadio Azteca was delayed by one hour due to severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in Mexico City.
FIFA enforced its weather safety protocol, which requires play to be delayed when lightning is detected within an 8-mile radius of the stadium.
