The big story of the 2026 MLB trade deadline was the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes.
Even months ago, before it was confirmed that he would be dealt, speculation grew around the league about his next destination and how far contending teams would be willing to go to add the superstar to bolster their starting rotation. As we got closer, it became clear that the Skubal hunt would largely be determined by the National League arms race, with the division-leaders Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Atlanta Braves all vying for the two-time Cy Young winner.
When the Dodgers ultimately pulled it off for a somewhat modest return, it was the Brewers that faced the brunt of the criticism league-wide for allowing Skubal to land with the back-to-back World Series champions for a few reasons.
For one, Milwaukee has built one of the top farm systems in baseball, and if they wanted to get ultra-aggressive in their trade deadline pursuit, they could have. It also felt like the perfect opportunity to maximize their current window, finally dethrone the Dodgers in the National League, and claim their first ever title.
While it was clear that they were real players for Skubal, many wondered how far they were truly willing to go. In an appearance on the Foul Territory podcast, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal explained what he saw from the Brewers front office, revealing key details about their negotiations and final offers.
"They offered a number of different scenarios to the Tigers, some of which involved pitching," Rosenthal said. "None of them involved Logan Henderson."
Rosenthal added that Luis Peña, the club's No. 2 overall prospect and MLB Pipeline's No. 18 overall prospect, was made available to the Tigers in some of their "serious" offers.
"They weren't just there for show... it just turned out that the Dodgers offers were preferable to the Tigers," he said.
With Skubal's status as a rental heading into free agency at the end of the year with little chance of re-signing with the Brewers if they had got him, there is certainly a limit to what they can be comfortable giving up. And considering the willingness to part with a 19-year-old with so much upside in Peña, it is clear that the limit was quite high.
But when it was time to bid aggressively against the defending World Series champs and heavy favorite to three-peat, the Brewers could not go all-in to match the pitching-heavy return that Los Angeles gave Detroit. In that sense, the disconnect may not be simply on the strength of the offer from Milwaukee but in the needs of both teams.
But as Rosenthal points out, many see this year as the Brewers' best opportunity to knock off the Dodgers. And while this is of course still in play, it will be a lot tougher when one of the best arms in the game is in the opposite dugout instead of their own.
