New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has not played in the last two games against the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders as he was recovering from a shoulder injury. But even though he was not on the field the last couple of Sundays, he has stepped up as a vocal leader for New England’s depth replacements.

During his press conference yesterday, Gonzo spoke about his vocal leadership.

“I was able to be out there and talk to [Charles] Woods, talk to Kendall [Vildor], talk to the guys just in the back end, just like as if I was out there,” said Gonzalez.

“Being able to do that, it’s cool [because] it kind of helps me out to be able to continue to grow my vocals and trying to lead and do things like that.”

Christian Gonzalez Leadership

Now in his fourth NFL season (all with the Patriots), Gonzalez has established himself as one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks with one Pro Bowl selection and a second-team All-Pro nomination to his name.

This offseason, he was rewarded with a 4-year, $135 million contract extension, which made him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

As one of New England’s longest-tenured and most accomplished players, Gonzalez’s growth as a vocal leader this season has been valuable and has gone a long way in helping New England’s secondary beat two veteran quarterbacks, Josh Allen and Kirk Cousins, in his absence.

Gonzalez is likely back in the fold on Sunday for New England’s divisional matchup with the Jets, as he said, “I’m ready to go”, when asked whether he was going to suit up.

Now New England’s top cornerback can bark out defensive calls on the field as opposed to the sidelines to his teammates, while he attempts to lock down the Jets’ elite receiver, Garrett Wilson.
