The Alabama Crimson Tide have been the most dominant program in college football since 2007, winning six national championships during that time.

All of those championships were won under Nick Saban's leadership. He retired after the 2023 season, which marked his 17th year as head coach. One of the biggest questions following his retirement was whether his successor, Kalen DeBoer, could maintain Alabama's dominance in college football.

It remains to be seen how DeBoer will perform on the field, as he has led Alabama to one College Football Playoff appearance in his two years. However, the team has yet to win the SEC championship and has not advanced past the quarterfinals in the playoff.

What isn't a question is if DeBoer can continue the dominance on the recruiting trail. The Crimson Tide has signed 17 five-star prospects since the 2023 recruiting cycle. 10 of those have been under DeBoer. Those prospects are:

  • 2026: RB Ezavier Crowell, LB Xavier Griffin, S Jireh Edwards
  • 2025: QB Keelon Russell, IOL Michael Carroll, CB Dijon Lee
  • 2024: WR Ryan Williams, CB Jaylen Mbakwe, CB Zay Mincey, CB Zabien Brown
  • 2023: EDGE Keon Keeley, S Caleb Downs, OT Kadyn Proctor, CB Dezz Ricks, DL James Smith, EDGE Yhonzae Pierre, LB Qua Russaw

The most revealing indicator of Alabama’s long-term outlook isn’t its playoff quarterfinal exit; it’s roster composition. Signing 17 five-star prospects in the last four recruiting cycles demonstrates continuity in the one area most programs struggle to sustain during coaching transitions: elite talent acquisition.

Replacing Saban was always going to be about infrastructure more than immediate trophies. Saban’s six national titles were built on relentless recruiting cycles that stockpiled depth across every position group. If DeBoer continues landing blue-chip quarterbacks, corners and defensive front pieces at this rate, the statistical probability of returning to championship form increases substantially. Talent density remains the clearest predictor of title contention in modern college football.

The next phase for Alabama is development and postseason execution. Recruiting dominance keeps the championship window open; converting it into SEC titles and deeper playoff runs will determine whether DeBoer’s era is remembered as sustained excellence or merely sustained relevance. For now, the numbers suggest Alabama’s foundation remains firmly intact, and that matters more than any single season’s result.
