Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills enter Week 3 rolling after opening their season 2-0, with a 36-31 win over the Houston Texans and a 41-31 victory over the Detroit Lions. The Bills have scored at least 36 points in both games, while Allen has been at the center of that production.
Tom Brady has noticed exactly what makes Allen different. Before Buffalo’s matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, Brady praised Allen’s ability to win in multiple ways.
“I don’t think there’s anyone playing better than him in the NFL. He just does an awesome job from the pocket, I think he’s doing a great job in there when his first reads open and Joe Brady calls a good play drops back his first guy’s open,” Brady said.
The numbers back up Brady’s point. Allen has completed 40 of 60 passes for 582 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions through two games. He has also rushed 20 times for 92 yards and four touchdowns. His 125.8 passer rating ranks among the NFL’s best early in the season.
Brady also noted, “Just the rare talent that can stand in there beat you from the pocket and then when you actually play pretty good coverage. He breaks the pocket and then still just does a lot of damage to these defenses. So he is nearly impossible to stop.”
Bills Strengths and Weaknesses Before the Chargers Game
Allen has an offense built around his versatility, which produced 855 total yards through two games, including 582 passing yards and 289 rushing yards. James Cook leads the team with 192 rushing yards, while tight end Dalton Kincaid has 225 receiving yards. That balance prevents defenses from simply loading up on Allen.
The passing game offers multiple answers. Kincaid has become Allen’s most productive receiver early, while DJ Moore has 100 receiving yards and Josh Palmer has 77 yards and two touchdowns on only two catches. Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir give Buffalo additional options. The Bills also confirmed that Moore and Coleman are active for Sunday’s game.
The defense is the obvious concern since Buffalo has allowed 31 points in each of its first two games, despite winning both. The Bills have generated seven sacks, including four from Greg Rousseau, but opponents have found ways to score. That gives Justin Herbert and the Chargers a clear path to keep this game competitive.
The Chargers can attack, with Omarion Hampton rushing for 137 yards through two games and scored a touchdown in each contest. He produced 94 rushing yards against Las Vegas in Week 2. Meanwhile, Los Angeles’ defense has struggled against the pass, allowing 273 passing yards per game, while Khalil Mack and Derwin James remain the key defensive playmakers.
