The United States Men's National Team has played in 11 World Cups, dating all the way back to the inaugural tournament in 1930. In 2026, the US will make its 12th appearance, having automatically qualified as one of three host nations.
The 2026 World Cup will be the second time the US hosts the World Cup; the other in 1994.
The last appearance for the USMNT was in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Team USA was in Group B with England, Iran, and Wales, and they finished second in the group with five points and had a 1-0-2 record to reach the knockout stage. There, they fell 3-1 to the Netherlands in the Round of 16 and were eliminated.
But has the USMNT ever won the World Cup?
No, though they have been very close to a World Cup Final in the past, and they've had runs that took the country by storm.

Across their previous 11 World Cup appearances, the USA's first came in 1930 — the first-ever World Cup — and it was their best finish: 3rd overall.
The first World Cup in 1930 was held in Uruguay and only had 13 teams participating. There were four groups, and Team USA was in Group 4 with Paraguay and Belgium.
The USMNT finished first in the group with four points (2 points per win at the time) after beating Paraguay and Belgium, which led to them reaching the semifinals. The USA then lost 6-1 to Argentina in the semifinals.
There was no third-place match, but the USA finished third over Yugoslavia based on goal difference. The USA and Yugoslavia finished with four points after three games played, but the USMNT had a +1 goal difference, and Yugoslavia had a 0-goal difference.
USMNT in Modern World Cups
The USMNT has participated in the majority of World Cups since 1990, and their best finish in recent World Cups was in 2002, when they reached the quarterfinals.
In 2002, the USA was in Group D with South Korea, Poland, and Portugal. The USMNT finished second with four points, with a record of one win, one draw, and one loss.
In the Round of 16, the USMNT faced off against their rivals, Mexico, and they reached the quarterfinals after beating the Mexican national team 2-0. In the quarterfinals, the USMNT were eliminated after losing 1-0 to Germany.
Since 1990, the USMNT has only missed one World Cup, the 2018 World Cup, where they failed to qualify through the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.
In their last three World Cups, the USMNT reached the Round of 16.

USA as World Cup Hosts in 1994
In the 1994 World Cup, the World Cup had 24 teams, and the USMNT was in Group A with Romania, Switzerland, and Colombia.
The USMNT finished third in the group with four points, with a record of one win, one draw, and one loss. Team USA still reached the knockout stage as they were among the four best third-place teams in the competition. Something similar will be done for the 2026 World Cup.
In the Round of 16, Team USA faced off against Brazil, and they lost 1-0. Brazil would go on to win the 1994 World Cup by beating Italy 3-2 on penalties.
