Hao-Yu Lee had no reason to treat the Detroit Tigers’ final game of 2026 like just another afternoon of baseball.
Detroit had already been eliminated from postseason contention, but Lee’s frustration after a late strikeout showed that the rookie was still competing until the final out. He broke his bat over his leg after striking out in the eighth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
A.J. Hinch liked what he saw.
“Tells you how competitive [he is],” Hinch said, per Jason Beck of MLB.com. “Last day of the season in a game that everybody talks about meaningless is not meaningless to him.”
Lee went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Detroit’s 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh. His final strikeout came with two outs in the eighth inning, ending his last opportunity to add to his rookie-season numbers.
The 23-year-old still finished the season with an encouraging offensive foundation. Lee recorded 10 home runs and 46 RBI while hitting .264/.322/.424 across 114 games and 364 plate appearances, according to Baseball Savant.
Lee also made his mark among Taiwanese-born MLB hitters. His 10 home runs set the single-season record for a Taiwanese-born player, while his 87 hits put him among the top offensive seasons by a Taiwanese-born position player.

The Tigers finished 76-86 and will now turn their attention toward 2027. For Hinch, however, Lee’s reaction provided one final glimpse of the competitiveness Detroit wants from its young players.
A meaningless game on the standings may have meant little for Detroit’s playoff position, but Lee clearly did not play it that way.
