Cleveland Guardians' Team President Chris Antonetti revealed an update regarding injured third baseman José Ramírez on Sunday morning.
Ramírez has been on the 10-day injured list for the Guardians since June 14 with a left hamate fracture.
The 33-year-old has been ramping up baseball activities and appears to be making progress.
According to Antonetti, Ramírez has begun hitting off of a tee and will soon start hitting overhand pitching. Ramírez has not dealt with any setbacks during his rehab, but Antonetti said he has to check more boxes.
The Guardians are clearly not looking to rush their franchise third baseman in order to get him fully healthy.
This is Ramírez's first season missing an extended period of time since 2019, where he had a right hamate fracture. Before this season, Ramírez played 152 or more games in five straight seasons.
While the injury is unfortunate, he has not been playing to his MVP-level through the first half of the 2026 season. The break for Ramírez might help him bounce back to his full potential.
In 72 games this season, he is slashing .239/.339/.418, good for a .757 OPS, with 10 home runs, 33 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. The fact that this is a down year for Ramírez showcases his incredible talent.
The injury recovery for a hamate fracture is usually four to eight weeks, so it is likely Ramírez will make his return to Cleveland in late-July or early-August.
