The Cleveland Guardians are 26-22 and sit in first place in the American League Central. However, they're set to be tested with an upcoming four-game series against the Detroit Tigers, beginning on Monday.

Aiming to increase their division lead, the Guardians' bullpen has been productive during the 2026 MLB season. Cleveland's relief pitchers rank 15th in ERA (4.00), ninth in opponent batting average (.230) and 10th in WHIP (1.28).

The unit has been strong, even without right-hander Shawn Armstrong. The 35-year-old signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract to join the Guardians this past offseason, with a mutual option after 2026.

Armstrong appeared in 12 games for Cleveland before being placed on the 15-day injured list on April 26 with a right groin injury. The injury occurred while warming up in the bullpen on April 24 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

However, after logging two rehab appearances with the Double-A Akron RubberDucks, he is ready to return. On Monday, the Guardians announced that Armstrong has been reinstated from the 15-day IL, while right-handed pitcher Codi Heuer has been optioned to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers.

Joining Cleveland with a fresh arm, Armstrong is seeking to help bolster a productive bullpen. In 12 outings before getting hurt, he tossed 10.2 innings, posting 13 strikeouts, a 4.22 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and .205 opponent batting average.

With just a one-game divisional lead over the Chicago White Sox (24-22), taking care of the Tigers is key to Cleveland staying out ahead. Monday's first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET at Comerica Park.
