Former Alabama QB and current college football analyst Greg McElroy has released his midseason ranking of the top-15 teams in college football. While it shouldn’t be any surprise that his beloved Crimson Tide barely fell at all after their loss to Georgia, there were a few interesting divergences between his ranking and the major polls.
On the latest episode of his Always College Football podcast, McElroy gave the top four spots to Georgia, Indiana, Miami and Notre Dame respectively while Alabama were placed just outside his top-four. Texas and Ohio State followed before his biggest surprise: Unbeaten UCLA at No. 8
Here is McElroy’s full ranking:
- Georgia
- Indiana
- Miami
- Notre Dame
- Alabama
- Texas
- Ohio State
- UCLA
- Utah
- BYU
- Kentucky
- Ole Miss
- Mississippi State
- Missouri
- Northwestern

At 5-0, UCLA is one of only two teams remaining in the Big Ten Conference that has yet to taste defeat. The fact that they just went into Oregon at Autzen Stadium and beat them put the wider college football world on notice.
Things could get more challenging for them after starting QB Nico Iamaleava suffered a season-ending injury, but the Bruins don’t have another game against a currently-ranked opponent until their season-finale against USC on November 28.
Nevertheless, there are a ton of parallels between this UCLA team and last year’s world-shocking Indiana team. A deeper dive into that will probably be forthcoming.

As for the rest of McElroy’s ranking, it really shouldn’t be a surprise that seven of his top-15 teams are in the SEC. One could debate the order and whether certain teams belong as high as they are, but last year the SEC sent five teams to the College Football Playoff and McElroy has exactly five SEC teams in his top-12.
