The Detroit Zoo confirmed this Friday that Okidi, a giraffe calf, passed away after being severely wounded in an accident.
Okidi suffered a "serious vertebral injury" after crashing into a habitat viewing panel. Although it wasn't an easy decision, the veterinary team euthanized the young giraffe after considering all medical options.
"Earlier this week, prior to the Zoo opening, Okidi sustained significant injuries after running into a habitat viewing panel in her indoor habitat at the Zoo. Our animal care and veterinary teams responded immediately and monitored her around the clock. Diagnostic testing revealed a serious vertebral injury. Given the severity of the injury and poor prognosis, our animal care and veterinary team made the humane but heartbreaking decision to euthanize Okidi," the Detroit Zoo said in a statement.
"The herd, including her mother, Zara, was given the opportunity to observe Okidi following the procedure, an important step in supporting herd dynamics. Our team continues to monitor and provide additional support to Zara, Jabari, Mpenzi and Kivuli. Okidi brought joy to so many, and she was deeply loved by those who cared for her each day. We are grateful to our staff for their compassion and expertise, and to our community for holding space with us as we mourn this loss."
Okidi was born just a few months ago on Nov. 23, 2025.

Countless people chimed in on the Detroit Zoo's announcement this Friday with their thoughts on Okidi's sudden death.
"She had the best life! Although short she was never hungry and never cold! She was loved by many who never met her. Our hearts go out to the zoo keepers who helped take care of her," a Facebook user commented.
"My thoughts to your social team who has to see the worst in people in some of these comments, and to all of the care team who worked with her. You know in your hearts what she meant to you and what happened more than the two cents of the public. Lean on each other and know that you have support no matter what some say," another person wrote.
As of now, there aren't any plans for the Detroit Zoo to shut down its giraffe exhibit.
