Willy Adames is expected to avoid the injured list after leaving Wednesday night's game against the Houston Astros with back spasms, but the San Francisco Giants will give their starting shortstop extra time to recover.
Adames exited during the Giants' 2-1 loss after experiencing discomfort in his back. Manager Tony Vitello said afterward that the injury is being treated as day-to-day, with the club planning to keep him out of Friday's series opener against the Colorado Rockies as a precaution.
The veteran has been one of San Francisco's everyday fixtures despite an inconsistent offensive season. Through 116 games, Adames is batting .224 with 19 home runs, 48 RBIs and 100 hits. He also sits one homer shy of reaching 200 for his major league career.
After the game, NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic reported the Giants expect Adames to miss the opener against Colorado while receiving treatment for the back spasms.
Christian Koss is expected to handle shortstop while Adames recovers. The timing is difficult for San Francisco, which is already without infielders Matt Chapman and Casey Schmitt because of injuries.
The Giants have dropped to 50-71 and remain fourth in the National League West after the loss to Houston. Although they are out of postseason contention, keeping Adames healthy remains a priority for the remainder of the season.

Houston, meanwhile, improved to 62-60 with Wednesday's victory and maintained first place in the American League West. The Astros completed a series win behind another strong pitching performance.
The Giants will have Thursday off before opening a three-game home series against the Rockies. If Adames responds well to treatment over the off day, San Francisco hopes he can return later in the weekend rather than miss extended time.
