The New York Giants might be in the market for a quarterback after losing Jaxson Dart to an injury in Week 2.
During Monday night’s game, Dart hurt his left knee after being hit by Los Angeles Rams linebackers Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart. The initial belief was that he’d miss a few weeks with an MCL sprain, but the latest imaging on him told a different story.
“Further testing today revealed Giants QB Jaxson Dart’s knee injury is worse than initially thought, and the team and Dart now are facing the possibility of season-ending knee surgery,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said. “Further testing today revealed Giants QB Jaxson Dart’s knee injury is worse than initially thought, and the team and Dart now are facing the possibility of season-ending knee surgery.”
As of now, Jameis Winston is set to start at quarterback for the Giants. However, they could potentially scan the trade market for an upgrade.

With that being said, Giants author Gary Myers believes John Harbaugh’s squad should consider trading for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
“If Jaxson Dart is done for the year, I think the Giants should trade for Vikings third-string QB J.J. McCarthy,” Myers wrote on social media. “GM Joe Schoen considered him w/6th overall pick in 2024 (they took Malik Nabers). McCarthy helped Jim Harbaugh win national championship in 2023 and he loves McCarthy. John and Jim often sign players with a history with each other. Probably would cost only mid-round pick and Giants could run same RPO offense they were using with Dart that is not suited to Jameis Winston. If McCarthy plays well for Giants, can build up his value to trade him after season or supplant Winston as Dart’s backup. Low-risk move. McCarthy has been huge disappointment in Minnesota but he’s only 23 years old, a few months older than Dart.”
Is J.J. McCarthy worth taking a risk on?
Obviously, the G-Men won’t be able to replace Dart and his production overnight. The dual-threat quarterback proved his worth in 2025, finishing his rookie campaign with 2,272 passing yards, 487 rushing yards and 24 total touchdowns.
If the Giants are intrigued by McCarthy’s potential though, maybe taking a chance on him isn’t the worst thing in the world. He’s just 23 years old and still hasn’t had a
On the flip side, McCarthy would need time to learn Matt Nagy’s playbook. Winston, meanwhile, should feel a bit more comfortable running the Giants’ offense since he’s got experience in that system.
