The New York Giants aren’t exactly subtle when it comes to their feelings about Cam Skattebo.
Skattebo had a productive rookie year with the Giants, rushing for 410 yards and five touchdowns in eight games. His first season in the NFL was ultimately cut short when he suffered an open tibia fracture and right ankle dislocation.
Unfortunately for Skattebo, his 2026 season is off to a rough start. He had a costly fumble in overtime against the Commanders that led to a Week 5 tie. Giants coach John Harbaugh decided to bench him the following weekend against the Saints.
“I got punished for what I did and I understand it,” Skattebo said, via Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic. “I gotta be ready when coach calls my name and that wasn’t today. The message was keep your head down and keep going. They understand the type of player I am and I just gotta continue to do my job and do it to the best of my abilities.”
Unlike last weekend, Skattebo is expected to receive carries this Sunday against the Texans. However, he might not last long at the top of the depth chart.

A replacement could be on the way.
According to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the Giants are expected to pursue a running back before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. If that happens, Skattebo’s role would certainly be reduced to that of a backup.
“The Giants will likely try to add to the running back room before the trade deadline,” Hughes wrote. “It’s just a matter of if they can do anything – I have my doubts. Skattebo should leave that house, but once out of it, I’m not sure the Giants hand him the role he was enjoying pre-benching.”
Jonathan Taylor has been mentioned as a potential trade target for the Giants, but it’s hard to imagine the Colts trade him away.
Nonetheless, Skattebo’s role with the Giants is very much up in the air right now.
