The New York Giants are moving on from Jaxson Dart as their starter after an MRI delivered worse news than initially expected on Dart’s injured left knee.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Jameis Winston will take over going forward while Dart is facing an extended absence that could cost him the remainder of the season.
“With Jaxson Dart likely lost for the season, it’ll be Jameis Winston going forward,” Rapoport reported.
The update represents a dramatic change from Monday night. ESPN first reported that Dart was initially believed to have suffered an MCL sprain during the Giants’ 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and X-rays were negative.
Further testing seems to have changed the picture on Tuesday.
“Giants QB Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury last night that was worse than anticipated, sources told me and Mike Garafolo after the MRI,” Rapoport wrote. “He’s out an extended period of time, possibly the season.”
The Giants will move forward with Winston as their starter, who replaced Dart after the latter was injured on the opening possession of Monday’s matchup.
Winston struggled in relief, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and one interception as New York managed six points. The veteran said afterward he needed to improve.

Dart’s injury happened when he jumped to throw under pressure and was hit by multiple Rams defenders. He later returned to the sideline in street clothes after undergoing X-rays.
Although Rapoport did not state that Dart has definitively been ruled out for the entire season, the MRI revealed a more serious situation than initial examinations suggested and made a season-ending absence likely.
Winston and the Giants next host the Tennessee Titans in Week 3 at 1 p.m. ET.
