Giannis claims that he didn't want to leave Milwaukee. The two-time NBA MVP and one-time champion is out anyway, though. He's been traded to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster move finalized on Monday evening.
Milwaukee is trading Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including No. 13 in Tuesday's NBA draft), one pick swap and one second-round pick, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. The draft picks Miami is sending to Milwaukee include unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033 along with No. 13, a pick swap in 2030 and a 2033 second-rounder.
Giannis had been on the trade block last season, but ultimately stuck with Milwaukee. On February 5, 2026, ahead of the trade deadline, he posted the Leonardo DiCaprio "I'm not leaving!" clip from "Wolf of Wall Street."
Less than five months later, he's gone.
That tweet has aged poorly, don't you think?
NBA fans making fun of Giannis's "I'm not leaving" tweet
Most people figured in real time that the tweet would not age well. And they were not wrong.
"Even in the moment he tweeted this you could feel how badly it would age," Molly Morrison shared.
"It was bad in the moment too lol. there were numerous reports saying Giannis just wanted out. They then didn't trade him at the deadline and he tweeted this," one fan added.
"Welp, lol," another fan added.
"Bro acting like he didn’t just demand a trade 6 different ways over the past year," another fan added.
"I love you Giannis, but this gimmick has to stop," another fan added.
Giannis has made it clear that he loves Milwaukee, but he loves winning more. And he clearly believes that he has a better chance of winning, both in the short term and the long term, in Miami rather than Milwaukee.
