Outfielder George Springer was one of the catalysts in bringing the Houston Astros to contention in the mid-2010s, and his signing with the Toronto Blue Jays before the 2021 season had a similar effect.
After spending the first seven seasons of his MLB career in Houston, Springer signed with Toronto on a six-year, $150 million contract. As the 2026 season comes to a close this weekend, that deal is expiring shortly.
With the Blue Jays deciding to sell at the trade deadline, Springer’s name was brought up in trade rumors. Nothing ended up being finalized, and the veteran remained north of the border. Now it appears that his time with the club could really be at an end.
On Friday, Hazel Mae of MLB International asked Springer about his future in baseball. He gave the Blue Jays some credit for how his career turned out, and said he did not know whether or not he would retire following the season.
Springer turned 37 last Saturday, and 2026 marked his 13th season in MLB. He managed to get to 300 home runs earlier this season and stands at 308 for his career across just under 7,000 plate appearances.
After a career revival season in 2025, the 37-year-old has had a much more mild 2026 season. In 124 games, he is slashing .251/.323/.407 (.730 OPS) with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs. He spent most of the year at the designated hitter spot.
Springer’s time in the outfield is about over, as he went from playing roughly 1,000 innings out there in 2024 to roughly 400 in 2025 and now only 16 in 2026. He was still able to go 12-for-14 on stolen bases, however.

The veteran said that he is nowhere near a decision on his future yet. If he decides to leave Toronto, he would likely find some kind of suitor somewhere. The Blue Jays would certainly have him back, or he could opt to retire.
If this is it for his career, Springer has accomplished a lot at the plate over his 13 seasons. He has a career OPS of .823 and does have a World Series ring to his name, although that came earlier in his career with the Astros.
