The New York Yankees made one of their biggest organizational moves of the season Tuesday, optioning shortstop Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while promoting top prospect George Lombard Jr. to the major leagues for the first time.
The move came after New York's 13-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals and signals a major shift in the club's long-term plans. According to YES Network's Jack Curry and independent baseball insider Francys Romero, the Yankees are prepared to give Lombard an extended opportunity, with his performance potentially shaping Volpe's future in the organization.
The Yankees entered Tuesday with a 63-50 record, sitting 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East while holding the top American League Wild Card spot.
Lombard earned the promotion after a strong season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 21-year-old batted .268/.405/.440 in 56 games, collecting 16 doubles, six home runs, 21 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. After missing time with two sprained fingers on his left hand, he returned to post a 1.081 OPS, strengthening his case for a major league opportunity.
Volpe, meanwhile, struggled to establish himself offensively in 2026. The 24-year-old hit .240 across 56 games with 41 hits, nine doubles, one home run, 19 RBIs and 45 strikeouts in 171 at-bats while producing a 95 wRC+.

The Yankees' decision reflects confidence that Lombard can provide a spark during the club's postseason push. It also creates significant uncertainty surrounding Volpe, who was once viewed as the franchise's long-term answer at shortstop.
If Lombard delivers an excellent or even above-average performance during the final two months of the season, reports indicate the Yankees could consider trading Volpe during the offseason or moving on from him entirely as they continue building around their next generation of talent.
