Garrett Mitchell is finally having a bounce-back season. But is it enough to boost his fantasy stock?

The Brewers outfielder has been a magnet for injuries since making his MLB debut in 2022, and a healthy 2026 campaign is showing some genuine improvements both on the surface and in underlying data. However, there is one metric that hasn’t made the same progress as the rest of his stats. And this one aspect of his game has a massive impact on his fantasy value.

Here’s what fantasy baseball managers need to know.

A Talented But Injury-Prone Player Finally Having a Full Season

The 2020 first-round draft pick entered the MLB with a ton of promise, ending his 28-game debut in 2022 slashing .311/.373/.459 with a .832 OPS, two home runs, nine RBI, and eight stolen bases. Then, his 2023 season was instantly derailed by season-ending shoulder surgery in April.

A broken finger and oblique strain followed over the next few seasons, and another shoulder injury cut into his 2025 campaign. His stats took a major beating, and he hit a career-low .206/.286/.294 with no home runs and a 25:7 K:BB ratio in 2025.

A hamstring cramp in 2026 threatened to cut another season short, but Mitchell has been able to play over 90 games for the first time in his professional career. The consistent playing time alone has resulted in an improved .266/.357/.435 slash line with eight homers and 49 RBI on 82 hits.

Mitchell’s Statcast profile is also much better, showing a 92.5-mph exit velocity, 13.7% barrel rate, 49.2% hard-hit rate, and 77.4-mph bat speed.

Of course, team context doesn’t hurt. The Brewers are World Series contenders this year, which can make an improved season look even better. Still, Mitchell is finally having a healthy season when he is performing well at the plate.

The Strikeout Rate Is Still the Story, and It Has Barely Moved

But while most of Mitchell’s underlying metrics show improvement, one major factor is still holding him back from being a breakout fantasy asset.

Mitchell’s strikeout rate has been above average his entire career, being as high as 41.2% when he first entered the league. (For context, the MLB average K% is around 23%.) His rate has adjusted modestly from 32.1% in 2025 to 31.9%, but that still puts him in the bottom sixth percentile in the league. And while his chase rate is top-tier, his 36.8% whiff rate is in the second percentile, showcasing an exceedingly high number of swing-and-miss cases.

Now, FanGraphs confirms his strikeout rate has gone down from 38% in May to 25.3% in July. That’s a positive sign, although the progression is over a small sample size and hasn’t been properly priced by the market yet.

A one-month change is more indicative of a hot streak than sustainable change, and Mitchell’s strikeout rate has been too high for too long to suggest it has gone down for good.

The Fantasy Call: Ceiling-Raiser, Not a New Player

Garrett Mitchell is having the strongest season of his career, and most of his underlying metrics show sustainable change. However, his high strikeout rate and injury history remain red flags on his fantasy baseball resume.

The consensus is that the improvements are real, but the small sample size doesn’t confirm that the fixes are permanent. Mitchell is readily available on the waiver wire, but fantasy managers need to weigh his downsides and not overpay for him.

Questions About Garrett Mitchell, Answered

Has Garrett Mitchell actually fixed his strikeout problem?
Not yet. Mitchell’s strikeout rate remains high, although his rate dropped from 38% in May to 25.3% in July. That is a positive development, but the one-month sample is too small to establish that the improvement is sustainable.

Why has Garrett Mitchell struggled with strikeouts throughout his career?
Mitchell’s strikeout rate has been above average throughout his career, reaching 41.2% when he entered the league. His 36.8% whiff rate remains a major concern even though his chase rate is top-tier.

Is Garrett Mitchell’s 2026 season legitimate?
Mitchell is having the strongest season of his career, with improved production and underlying metrics while playing more than 90 games for the first time professionally. His high strikeout rate and injury history remain significant concerns for fantasy managers.
