New York Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich is under fire for the team’s struggling attack in 2026. But he’s not dwelling on the past.
“We’ve had, obviously, an opportunity to get through the game film from last week, kind of flush that, learn from it, correct the mistakes, get focused on the Dolphins this week, a good defense,” Reich said in his weekly media availability. “They’ve got playmakers on all three levels, speed on the edge, two linebackers are really good players and then the secondary, very good secondary.”
Red zone failure has been a particular sticking point this season for the Jets. They have six touchdowns in 14 trips (a 37.5% average), often settling for field goals.
But Reich pointed out the team’s success on big plays, including last week’s 48-yard bomb to Omar Cooper Jr.
“I’m encouraged by Geno’s and the guys’ production outside the red zone,” Reich said. “We’ve had a bunch of touchdowns outside the red zone, I think that’s a good sign of some things,” he said. “So, there’s some really good foundational pieces as well. I’m very aware of the areas where I and we need to be better and trust me, we’re working hard to get better in those areas and look forward to those opportunities to prove that.”
There’s also the matter of the Jets screwing up in the last two minutes of the first half and the fourth quarter.
“The red zone again, red zone, third down, short yardage, on those, there needs to be improvement there in every way.” Reich said. “And again, as a coordinator, that starts with me.”
At times, Reich has been missing such big play items as Breece Hall and Adonai Mitchell, as well as tight end Mason Taylor, receiver Omar Cooper and left guard Dylan Parham. Having a full complement of weapons would aid in the quest to put more points on the board.
“I think Coop’s a complete receiver, I mean, I think he can do everything,” Reich said. “And you consider he was hurt, he was out and he just came back, and how well he played. Sadiq (tight end Kenyon) had a good game a few weeks ago and Breece is our bell cow along with Garrett [Wilson].
“And then the prospect of getting AD [Mitchell] back, who’s dynamic and also very versatile, can go deep, he can do the stuff underneath. We feel really good about our weapons. And so when they’re all healthy and when we’re getting things going, I feel very good about better production, more points. But we got to work. We got to earn every yard. We got to earn every point.”
The 2-4 Jets play the winless Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The Jets are 5.5-point home favorites.
