Frances Tiafoe will play his Round of 16 match against No. 7 seed Daniil Medvedev at the 2026 US Open today after advancing with a straight-set victory over Valentin Vacherot, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, in the third round.
The 28-year-old reached the semifinals at the tournament in 2022 and 2024 and will look to make another deep run in New York this year.
All About Frances Tiafoe’s Parents
Frances Tiafoe’s parents are Constant Tiafoe and Alphina Kamara, who emigrated from Sierra Leone to the United States in the 1990s to escape the country’s brutal civil war.
After settling in Maryland, Constant initially worked as a day laborer on the construction crew building the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park. Once construction was completed, he was hired as the facility’s head of maintenance and given a spare office to live in.
That arrangement allowed Frances and his twin brother, Franklin, to live at the tennis center and learn the sport from a very young age. Meanwhile, their mother, Alphina, worked long night shifts as a nurse to help support the family.

Frances has often spoken about the sacrifices his parents made to give him and his brother opportunities they did not have growing up in Sierra Leone.
“I realize now how hard he worked, and how much he sacrificed, to allow my brother and me to chase our dreams and have the life he and my mom wanted us to have, the one they couldn’t have in Sierra Leone,” the tennis pro wrote in The Players’ Tribune a few years ago.
The conflict that forced Frances Tiafoe’s parents to flee their home country was the Sierra Leone Civil War. The devastating conflict lasted nearly 11 years, beginning on March 23, 1991, and officially ending on January 18, 2002.
Their journey from Sierra Leone to the United States ultimately became an important part of Frances’ story, as the sacrifices of both Constant and Alphina helped give their sons the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
Today, Tiafoe is one of the most recognizable American tennis players on the ATP Tour and is once again competing for a deep run at the US Open.
