France and Paraguay meet in a Round of 16 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 4, with a quarterfinal berth on the line.
The winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face Morocco, but players and fans could first have to battle one of the hottest environments ever seen at a FIFA World Cup.
While the matchup itself features some of the tournament's biggest stars, including Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembélé, much of the talk leading up to kickoff was on the extreme weather conditions in Philadelphia rather than the action on the field.
Temperatures are forecast to reach nearly 100°F (38°C) for the 5:00 p.m. ET kickoff, with the heat index expected to push conditions even higher. The playing surface could exceed 104°F (40°C), making it one of the hottest World Cup matches ever contested.
In addition to the extreme heat, weather forecasters had earlier warned of possible showers and thunderstorms throughout the afternoon, creating uncertainty over whether the match could be interrupted.
Despite the challenging conditions, hundreds of supporters gathered outside Philadelphia Stadium hours before kickoff.
FIFA too acknowledged the weather concerns in a statement issued before the match.
"We are closely monitoring the weather situation in Philadelphia for match number 089. At this stage, there is a high risk of delays due to weather conditions."
Tournament organizers had said they would continue monitoring conditions and provide further updates if necessary.

Under FIFA's weather safety protocols, play will only be suspended if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium. Should that occur, the match would be halted immediately and could only resume after 30 minutes have passed without another nearby lightning strike.
With temperatures approaching historic levels and storm clouds looming over Philadelphia, both teams could face one of the toughest environmental tests of the tournament.
Fans React to France vs. Paraguay Temperature Concerns
As the discussion about the extreme conditions spread online, fans were quick to react with a mix of concern and disbelief ahead of kickoff.
One fan questioned a post claiming temperatures would hit 60 degrees, commenting, "It's 37 rn, 60 it's impossible."
Another simply couldn't believe the forecast, saying: “That cannot be possible.”
Some fans even predicted the heat would work in Paraguay's favor.
“Enciso and almiron is going to cook France in this heat.”
“Paraguay 1:0 at full time shock of the tournament.”
Meanwhile, one France fan saw the conditions as the perfect stage for Kylian Mbappé.
“Nothing hotter than the Mbappé Special.”
