Framber Valdez is going north.
The inning-eating, groundball expert pitcher has signed a 3-year, $115M deal with the Detroit Tigers after spending his entire career with the Houston Astros. The deal hands Valdez the highest AAV for a lefty pitcher in history at $38.3M, $1.9M above Blake Snell’s prior record of $36.4M. It’s fifth among all pitchers behind Shohei Ohtani ($70M), Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander ($43.3M), and Blake Wheeler ($42M). It’s the 10th-highest AAV in history among all players.

This is a major move for a Tigers organization that wants to make the most out of what could be Tarik Skubal’s final year in Detroit, if not give him a partner who encourages the 2x Cy Young winner to stay. Regardless, it gives the team one of the best 1-2 rotation punches in MLB and makes for a juicy fantasy pairing for managers getting ready to draft.

Framber Valdez’s 2026 Fantasy Projections

Tarik Skubal anchors the rotation while Valdez slots cleanly behind him.

Stat Breakdown and Park Factors

FanGraphs FGDC Projections:
13 W | 3.42 ERA | 1.24 WHIP | 180 K | 8.33 K/9 | 19 QS | 22.2% K% | 3.54 FIP | .295 BABIP | 3.6 WAR

Valdez has been one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball thanks to his heavy groundball-inducing repertoire that can still cause plenty of missed bats, and the projections reflect as much. Some age-based decline is factored in based on his lower K metrics and an upward creeping FIP, but his fit with the Tigers helps counteract that and even gives him a .24 drop in ERA. His place as the No. 2 guy behind Skubal means his workload won’t take a dip, as was potentially feared, and is even projected at three more than 2025.

Looking further into his new home, this really is a fantastic fit. The Tigers finished 2025 ranked ninth in the league in DRS at 36, a whopping 34 higher than the Astros. This was thanks to Detroit’s league-leading 47 rTS (runs saved due to team shift), a metric that works really, really well in tandem with groundball pitchers. Now, what were we saying Valdez is elite at? Oh, right!

More run support can also be expected for the hurler, as the rising Tigers offense will be in tact YoY and was better than the Astros in wOBA (.317 vs. .312), wRC+ (103 vs. 100), and WAR (21.9 vs. 20.8) last season. Comerica Park will keep balls in play given its pitcher-friendly dimensions (third-deepest point in MLB, fifth-biggest Playing Field Area, tied-fourth-longest Avg. Fence Distance, tied-ninth-longest Avg. HR Distance), meaning the hurler with the second-lowest FB% in the league last year should see his league seventh-lowest HR/9 (0.70) and tied-ninth-lowest total HR (15) stay low.

Risks and Upside

Now, everything isn’t all positive for Valdez. Despite the significant park and team fit, the projections do show that the lefty won’t see a major stat boost from it. That’s because of the aforementioned age-based decline, as pitchers can see their velocity, K, and power metrics worsen the further into their 30s they get. Valdez will be 32 for the entire 2026 campaign, and his fastball, slider, and cutter velo all dropped YoY in 2025 while his Barrel%, HardHit%, and Hard% ticked up.

And while health has never been a major concern, Valdez has thrown 175+ IP in each of the last four years and second-most total over that span. With this signing putting Valdez as the guy behind Skubal, there’s no sign of that slowing down. While that’s good for counting stats, the question then comes: How much longer will it last?

If it does, and the suggestions of Valdez’s age regression are exaggerated, then 2026 could be a career year that would make him a Top-15 SP in fantasy. If it doesn’t, that baked-in floor still sets him up with a strong mid-rotation floor.

Creating a 1-2 combo of Skubal and Valdez will take pressure off the rest of the Tigers rotation. Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize should see more run support as they pair up against the No. 3s and No. 4s of other rotations, giving them a value boost for additional wins and setting them up as mid-rotation value and sleeper picks, respectively. Reese Olson and Drew Anderson, meanwhile, could be worth select streamer pickups.

Additionally, Valdez’s presence and knack for taking games deep (83 QS, 8 CG since ‘22; second in MLB) could also equal more rest for the Tigers bullpen and more save and hold chances for the likes of Kyle Finnegan, Will Vest, and other new addition Kenley Jansen.

Draft Strategy

Following the signing news, Valdez’s ADP on NFBC has climbed to 97.13 — the 37th pitcher off the board — given how favorable an environment he’s landed in. That currently places him at the top of Round 8 in drafts and we expect that to rise further, putting him down as a key target at the end of the early rounds (6–7). Given his solid-yet-not-elite strikeout numbers, it’s advised that anyone already hurting in that category not select the lefty to avoid a hole that can’t be climbed out of.

Flaherty and Mize can both be had in the late rounds and now carry interesting upside, while Jansen could see a bump towards the front of the middle rounds at about Round 10. Vest, Finnegan and other undervalued Tigers relieves make for players to monitor on waivers.

Summary

The move from Houston to Detroit cements Framber Valdez as a reliable SP2 with borderline SP1 upside for 2026 drafts. Any negatives from his age have been relatively offset by the lineup around him and park he’ll toss in. He’ll provide strong volume to support counting stats while giving stable efficiency. As always, stay tuned for any spring training updates and adjust your rankings accordingly.
