Former NFL strength coach Kim Wood, former college football coach Bud Moore, and high school football coaches Shepherd Skanes and Rusty Phelps have died.
Wood, a beloved NFL strength coach, was a trendsetter. He's credited with being the first true NFL strength coach.
Legendary Bengals linebacker Reggie Williams shared the news on social media of Wood's death.
"Sadly, I was told that Cincinnati Bengals Strength and Conditioning Coach Kim Wood passed away." Williams wrote. "No other one person is responsible for turning an Ivy League prospect into a 14 year starting linebacker in the NFL than Kim Wood. If he demanded one more rep, I would give him two. Absolutely no steroids! Just 8-12 perfect reps to failure, three times a week, keep a chart, don’t cheat yourself, and always improve, every workout, no matter where you are on the planet. Pain is your friend. Only appears when making you stronger. Rest In Eternity my friend."
Moore, a former Alabama football player and Kansas coach, died at 86.
"His college coaching career began at age 22 as an offensive line coach at Kentucky. He went on to coach under former UA coach Gene Stallings at Texas A&M, then at North Carolina, before Bryant hired him as an offensive assistant in 1972. In three years on Bryant's staff, Moore was part of three SEC championship teams and the 1973 national championship," the Tuscaloosa News reported.
"He recruited the Birmingham area for Bryant and served as offensive coordinator in 1974. Former Alabama football player Robert “Bud” Moore (71) helps carry coach Paul W. “Bear” Bryant after a 1960 Iron Bowl win. Moore was head coach at the University of Kansas from 1975-1978."
Skanes, meanwhile, was a beloved high school football coach in Alabama. He led Fairfield High School for three seasons before dying this week. Phelps passed away at 62. He was a legendary head coach at Jennings High School in Louisiana.
May all four rest in peace.
