There’s been some discourse this week over Indianapolis Colts owner Carli Irsay-Gordon taking notes on the sideline during her team’s games. And while some NFL fans find it weird, former NFL and college football GM Michael Lombardi believes people are making a mountain out of a molehill.
On Tuesday, Lombardi wrote that people are looking too much into Irsay-Gordon’s note-taking. He pointed out that she runs the team and has a right to act however she pleases on the sidelines.
“So much is being made of Carlie Irsay-Gordon taking notes on the sideline, and of her involvement in the play calling and the day to day running of the Colts. I don’t understand why people are so taken aback. She owns the team,” Lombardi wrote on X as a preview for his Substack.
Pushback from the Fans
While Lombardi may be right, fans didn’t see it that way. Many took to the replies and pointed out that the whole thing still looks very weird to them.
“She could easily watch the film with the coaches and discuss in game strategy and play calling in the private at their facility. She wants to be seen and the center of attention. It upstages the coaching staff and is a distraction for the players,” one user replied on X.
“She owns a team that plays in a taxpayer funded stadium, and a taxpayer funded training facility. If she wants total autonomy she should pay for everything herself, otherwise people can express their opinions regarding her behaviors and involvement with their team,” wrote another.
“It’s just seemingly abnormal,” a third wrote.

The good news is that Irsay-Gordon’s team is surging right now so she doesn’t need to worry too much about the outside noise. The team has gone from being 0-2 and looking like one of the worst teams in the league to being just one win behind the rival Jacksonville Jaguars for first place in the AFC South.
Simply put, things are looking good for the Colts right now.
