Former Steelers QB Says Steelers Offense Flips Script Under Coach Mike McCarthy

When the Pittsburgh Steelershired Mike McCarthy, the move made clear that the franchise wanted to address the offense's future. Not only to help the offense play more efficiently, but also to develop a quarterback of the future. As it stands, the Steelers have Aaron Rodgers in his final NFL season, and the team has retooled the offense's skill positions. The offensive philosophy could also take a strong turn under McCarthy. Former head coach Mike Tomlin hired his last two offensive coordinators with the idea of developing a strong running game. Arthur Smith delivered that, but the passing game still fell short. Now, former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch believes McCarthy will completely flip that approach.

Batch shared his thoughts on McCarthy's offensive approach on his Snap Count Podcast.

"I don't think the Steelers run the ball as much as they did last year," Batch said about the upcoming 2026 Steelers offense. "With coach McCarthy coming in, Aaron [Rodgers] is going to want to throw the football. That's why you acquired Michael Pittman [Jr.] It's going to open up those throwing lanes down the field."

Steelers New Look Offense?

Batch makes an excellent point. Rodgers will want to throw the ball more, especially since this season marks the end of the line for the future Hall-of-Famer. Other analysts have pointed out that McCarthy's ground attack doesn't produce top-ranking rushing statistics. Still, McCarthy's run game remains effective. The big question is whether it can be effective enough to make defenses respect it. If not, the Steelers could become one-dimensional, a recipe for disaster for a young offensive line protecting a 42-year-old quarterback who no longer moves like he once did.

That said, the shift could also bring a refreshing change of pace for Steelers fans. Ever since 2018, the Steelers offense has lacked an effective passing game. The 2024 and 2025 seasons showed progress, but in the end, Pittsburgh couldn't hang with elite offenses. McCarthy's approach not only offers a better chance at improving the passing game, the Steelers have also made clear investments to support the passing attack.

2026 Steelers Offseason Bolstered Offensive Weapons

The Steelers acquired Pittman in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason. The move has drawn praise from many, though some remain skeptical. Still, Pittman is a proven veteran who has produced even with shaky quarterback play. He'll slide into the WR2 spot as a strong complement to DK Metcalf. The Steelers also drafted Germie Bernard in the second round of the NFL Draft. Add in the fact that Roman Wilson now has a fresh start in an offense better suited to him, and the priority becomes clear: the Steelers offense intends to throw the ball more efficiently.

The biggest obstacle still lies in the offensive line. Though it has grown year-over-year, the line remains young, but it also carries plenty of upside. James Campen's presence could be a game changer. The Steelers will almost certainly expect to take a big step forward toward a more explosive offense. Just don't be surprised if some early growing pains come with it.
