Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Merril Hoge revealed this week that he survived a near-death experience during his NFL career.
Hoge, a former 10th-round pick from Idaho State, played for the Steelers from 1987-1993 before wrapping up his pro career on the Chicago Bears. He finished his time in the NFL with 3,139 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns.
During an interview with TMZ Live, Hoge revealed that he was cleared to play by the Bears just five days after suffering a concussion. He later went into cardiac arrest and had to spend days in intensive care at the age of 30.
“He says a team doctor cleared him to play just five days after the injury … without ever examining him in person. Instead, he claims the doctor asked him one question over the phone: ‘How do you feel?’ What happened next was terrifying … Merril says he went into cardiac arrest, spent days in intensive care and had to learn how to read again … all before his 31st birthday,” TMZ reported.

Merril Hoge shared his thoughts on the Jalen Hurts situation.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was ruled out for Week 6 due to a superficial blood clot. A few days later, he was ruled out for the season because imaging showed multiple blood clots were discovered in his lungs.
“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis,” the statement from his agent and the team read. “After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. … During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football.”
When asked about this situation, Hoge said he’s not under the belief the Eagles intentionally put Hurts in danger.
