WNBA fans made their thoughts known on Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington on Monday evening.
The Chicago Sky took on the Seattle Storm on the road on Monday night. While the Storm won the game, the treatment of Carrington is what made headlines. Carrington received a rousing ovation when she entered the game in the first quarter.
Carrington, fresh off an ejection against the Indiana Fever, was hit with a Flagrant 2 foul for her smacking of Sophie Cunningham. Carrington was promptly ejected from the game and could face further discipline.
However, on Monday night, the crowd in Seattle gave her a rousing applause.
"DiJonai Carrington got a HUGE ovation in Seattle as she checked into the game 👀," BrickCenter wrote on X.
Not everyone was happy about that, though.
"Seattle Storm fans boo Sophie Cunningham for defending women’s sports, scream at teen girls, and spit at Fever fans. They cheer DiJonai Carrington for assaulting Sophie 2 days ago. We see the toxic fans and they aren’t Fever fans," one fan wrote.
"Of course she did! What disgusting fan base," one fan added.
"The WNBA has less credibility than professional wrestling! When you have a business that is subsidized and doesn't have to concern itself with economics, the WNBA is the result," one fan added.
"Insane behavior," one added.
Former NFL player fires back at Carrington
Carrington had claimed that her "white privilege" tweet was not about Sophie Cunningham.
"You are correct, @DijonaiVictoria , my assumption, along with the majority of the sports world, was that you posting “white privilege” immediately following being thrown out of a game for fouling somebody white was regarding the foul. But if the two things are somehow not connected, that’s on me. I’ll stand corrected. 🙏🏾 However, America is a speaker oriented country, so the burden is on you for being clear, direct and easy to understand," Emmanuel Acho fired back.
There's always drama in the WNBA, that's for sure.
