Howie Roseman is always looking to improve the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster, regardless of the team’s level of success. Following Zach Ertz’s re-signing with the franchise, Mekhi Becton is the latest former Eagle interested in a potential reunion, offering a not-so-subtle invitation to the Eagles’ general manager: “Tell Howie to call me.”

Becton Revived His Career in Philadelphia

Becton started his career with the New York Jets after being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. He had a strong rookie season, with PFF grading him as the third-best rookie tackle.

However, injuries quickly derailed Becton’s career. In Week 1 of his sophomore campaign, he suffered a dislocated kneecap and cartilage damage, which forced him to miss the entire season. The next season, he suffered an avulsion fracture during training camp, causing him to miss his second straight full season.

When he returned from injury, Becton struggled, and due to his poor play and fit in the offensive scheme, the Jets declined his fifth-year option, making him a free agent. The Eagles took a flier on Becton, signing him to a one-year deal.

Offensive lineman guru Jeff Stoutland made the decision to boldly shift Becton inside to guard, and what a brilliant decision it was. Becton started 19 games (including the postseason) for the Eagles en route to their Super Bowl LIX victory. The dominance of the offensive line helped Saquon Barkley become just the ninth player in NFL history to have over 2000 rushing yards.

Would a Reunion Still Make Sense?

Becton signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, and his performance fell off a cliff. Becton had an abysmal 35.7 PFF grade, 79th out of 81 guards that qualified, and was the lowest-graded guard in run blocking. After just one season, he was released by the Chargers.

The Eagles’ struggles on the interior of the offensive line to start the 2026 season have led many fans to call for Roseman to sign Becton. Landon Dickerson is currently on the injured reserve list, and Cam Jurgens, who slid from center to left guard in the absence of Dickerson, had the 4th worst pass-blocking grade out of all offensive linemen in Week 2.

However, bringing back Becton does not guarantee a return to the level of player he was during his one-year stint. The running game and offensive system that Becton once thrived in has changed significantly with Sean Mannion now at the helm, and the man who deserves the most credit for his career rehabilitation, Stoutland, is no longer in Philadelphia, replaced by Chris Kuper. While Becton clearly would like to return to the Eagles, only time will tell if the interest from Roseman and the Philadelphia front office is mutual.
