The Washington Nationals have added a familiar arm to their pitching staff, claiming right-hander Matt Waldron off outright waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Nationals announced the move Saturday through their official communications account on X. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, Washington transferred left-hander Connelly Early from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL.
Waldron was designated for assignment by Toronto on Wednesday after spending part of the season with the Blue Jays. He opened the year with the San Diego Padres before joining Toronto.
The 29-year-old right-hander brings an unusual weapon to Washington in his knuckleball. Waldron has primarily worked as a starter during his career, although his recent stint with Toronto came entirely in relief.
His results have been difficult this season. Waldron owns a 7.54 ERA in the majors, although he has been considerably more effective in the minors, where he has posted a 1.33 ERA this season.

For Washington, the move adds another option to a pitching staff that has dealt with several injuries. The Nationals are hoping Waldron can provide length while they continue evaluating their pitching depth.
Early’s roster designation also creates room for the addition. The 24-year-old left-hander was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in late July and has been suffering left elbow inflammation.
Although the 60-day designation sounds significant, it does not automatically rule Early out for the season. His injured-list stint was backdated to July 1, meaning his eligibility timeline is already well underway.
For now, Washington will see whether Waldron’s unconventional approach can give its pitching staff another useful option down the stretch.
